GERD

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is very common, occuring in 10-20% of adults. 

Definition

GERD is reflux of stomach contents into the esophagus which causes burning pain in the chest.
Factors that contribute to reflux include weight gain, fatty foods, caffeinated or carbonated beverages, alcohol, spicy foods, and acidic foods. Some medications can also cause heartburn. 

Signs & Symptoms

  • Chest pain/heartburn

  • Cough 

  • Wheezing

  • Hoarseness 

Lab Testing & Imaging

Diagnosis is clinical but further testing is required to find the root cause of GERD.

Further investigation will look into any autoimmune processes, infections, microbiome imbalances, and inflammation.
