Multi-system, multi-symptom illness

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS)

CFS is also known as myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS).

Definition

The cause of CFS is unknown. There have been many proposed etiologies. The main causes studied are infections, immune and endocrine dysfunction, and neuropsychiatric factors.

Signs & Symptoms

Symptoms should be present for at least 6 months and have moderate to severe intensity for at least half of the time.  Symptoms include:

  • Fatigue

  • Post-exertional malaise

  • Unrefreshing sleep

  • Cognitive impairment

  • Orthostatic-related symptoms

CIRS is a condition that can share many similar signs and symptoms and should be ruled out as a cause of CFS.

Lab Testing

There are no diagnostic tests for CFS. Diagnosis is based on health history and physical exam findings. Other conditions that cause fatigue also need to be ruled out.
