IBS

Irritable Bowel Syndrome, or IBS, is the most common functional gastrointestinal disorder. It occurs in 10-15% of the population.

Definition

IBS is diagnosis of exclusion. This means all other health conditions have been ruled out but an individual still presents with recurrent abdominal pain related to two of the following:

Pain related to defecation

Pain associated with a change in stool frequency

Pain associated with a change in stool form

Signs & Symptoms

  • Diarrhea

  • Constipation

  • Abdominal pain 

  • Bloating

  • Gas

Lab Testing & Imaging

The cause of IBS is not completely understood and diagnosis is clinical.
Imaging and lab tests are performed to rule out all other medical conditions.
