Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity

Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity, or NCGS, occurs in up to 13% of the general population. NCGS is more common in women.

Definition

Non-celiac gluten sensitivity is a condition characterized by symptoms that are related to the ingestion of gluten in the absence of celiac disease or wheat allergy.

Signs & Symptoms

  • IBS-like symptoms (bloating, gas, diarrhea, & abdominal discomfort)

  • Fatigue

  • Headaches

  • Leg or arm numbness

  • Brain fog

  • Anemia

  • Depression

  • Anxiety

Lab Testing & Imaging

There are still some unknowns when it comes to diagnosing NCGS because the mechanism is unclear. There are no biomarkers to diagnose NCGS but testing will be preformed to rule out celiac disease, a wheat allergy, and other GI conditions that can cause similar symptoms.
