PCOS

PCOS is a chronic condition that requires ongoing support. PCOS occurs in 5-10% of women.

Definition

Diagnosis of PCOS requires at least 2 out of the following 3 criteria:

Menstrual Irregularity

N

Androgen Excess (Subjective or Objective)

N

Ovarian Cysts Present on Ultrasound

Signs & Symptoms

Symptoms vary from woman to woman and can include:

  • Irregular periods (>35 days), or no period
  • Hirsutism (abnormal hair growth, typically on the upper lip, chin, around the nipples, and/or along the lower abdomen)
  • Acne or thinning of hair
  • Weight gain
  • Low energy
  • Infertility

Lab Testing & Imaging 

Lab tests will include testosterone, FSH, thyroid, prolactin, and others to rule in PCOS and rule out other conditions that can present with similar symptoms. 

A pelvic ultrasound will show if ovarian cysts are present. 

Associated Health Conditions 

If left untreated, PCOS can lead to other health conditions including:

  • Endometrial hyperplasia/endometrial cancer
  • Metabolic syndrome
  • Cardiovascular disorders like high blood pressure and high cholesterol
  • Sleep apnea
  • Chronic inflammation
  • Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease
