Definition

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a group of physical and psychological symptoms that start several days before a menstrual cycle. Estrogen and progesterone levels fluctuate during the menstrual cycle and can impact PMS.

Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is when PMS symptoms are so severe that they interfere with daily activites, relationships, or work.
