SIBO
SIBO, or small intestinal bacteria overgrowth, is most commonly diagnosed in individuals with IBS.
Definition
SIBO is an overgrowth or imbalance of bacteria in the small intestine. Normal intestinal movement, stomach acid, mucus, secretory IgA, and a proper functioning ileocecal valve prevent SIBO from developing.
Signs & Symptoms
Symptoms vary from person to person depending on the type of overgrowth and can include:
- Bloating
- Gas
- Abdominal pain
- Constipation
- Diarrhea
- Nausea
Lab Testing & Imaging
A SIBO breath test is the most common way SIBO is diagnosed. Other lab tests and imaging may be used to help rule out other conditions that present with similar symptoms.
